On May 2, 25 Associates and guests gathered at CBU's Stritch Center to celebrate the Derby. We began with a St. Catherine of Siena prayer, and then it was time for the Run for the Roses.
Then we experienced an amazing traditional Derby meal of Hot Brown Sandwiches, Chicken Nuggets, Derby Cupcakes, Kentucky Derby Pies, and of course, Mint Juleps!
Our Hat Contest featured prizes for the most original, most elegant, and the funniest hats.
The Kentucky Derby Quiz game tested our knowledge of the race, and we honored the person who missed the most questions!

This year, we had two new bookies to replace the irreplaceable Sr. Cathy Galaskiewicz.
Six of those who gathered picked the winning horse - Golden Tempo, who came from last position to win the race!
Also, a proposal for a new Wisdom Circle was presented that would be centered on the many and varied forms of the Arts, and prayers were asked for the new group.
The empty chair in one of our pictures is for Sr. Cathy, who was with us in spirit and missed beyond measure.
She taught us the connection between St. Catherine of Siena and horse racing, how to make Mint Juleps, devised our system of betting, and pointed out the importance of standing for the singing of “My Old Kentucky Home."
So, y’all come on the first Saturday in May 2027 for our next Kentucky Derby Celebration for an afternoon of joyful fun with our Dominican family.
Always remember to wear a hat and bring $1 bills for betting!
Wonderful to keep up the tradition” Hats go to you Cathy always good to leave an imprint. Even here in Arizona someone recognized my pin and asked if I knew Cathy who taught him at Notre Dame!
Keep up that tradition in Memphis! Sr. Cathy
celebrated here at the home place in Kentucky.
Good to see your spirit !!! S. Martina
